I retired and live on a golf course in Bonita Springs FL. Working at a nearby golf course and still maintaining my single digit handicap! In reply to Ollie. Well, he did add the element of Odysseus' guilt at destroying Xenia (Zeus' Law, in the film), which gives a more complex view of the man -- that does seem justified, at least.

We share much of the same admiration as well as many of the same grievances here, and I think you summed them up quite well! The mismatch between epic visuals and colloquial script is what most bugged me, I think (aside from the lack of grounded, Greek culture). In a different review, someone suggested such an adaptation requires, in their eyes, a distinct motive or purpose to feel justified. What do you think of this notion? Do you feel Nolan added anything interesting and/or unique to the story, or was it more spectacle than anything?

Your review is excellent, sharp and accurate. This is a cozy film-flam alien encounter movie, enjoyable enough (just about) to keep you watching but juvenile in so many ways. The way the main character goes from no single word of language with the alien to – 30 seconds later – 250 words, then by the next scene almost full conversions (including allusive jokes, irony all understood etc) betrays its silliness from that perspective. It desperately, as you say, needed to get away from the Disney feel-good, but never did.
